Hot Buttered Soul: The Movie
Hot Buttered Soul was a revolutionary four track LP released by Isaac Hayes and the Bar-Kays in 1969. A few months later, 20-year-old Terry Fitzgerald, fresh from a Hawaiian winter season and a big fan of funk and soul rhythms, decided to borrow the name for his surfboard company. But all three words didn’t quite fit on the rainbow sash logo.Thus Hot Buttered Surfboards were born - and with it one of surfing’s true originals. But the third word never went missing. Instead it’s lived in the handmade, hand-painted HB surfboards and the styles that arose from riding them, over three decades, in the best surf on the planet.
Hot Buttered Soul: The Movie draws on a deep well of surf cinema heritage to present the surfing of the HB extended family. Choice selections from HB’s “Sultans of Speed” series, along with surf flick classics Morning of the Earth, A Winter’s Tale, Fantasea, Storm Riders and more, are expertly intercut by editor Mick Waters, with interviews and commentary from Andrew Kidman and Derek Hynd. Wherever they went, “Sultans” trips always had the knack of scoring amazing waves. Viewers will be stunned by the NSW north coast sessions of ’88, when in an outrageous 10 day binge, Poto, Simon Law, Cattle and Deaney surfed all the classic pointbreaks at their maximum size and shape.

Andrew Kidman’s Litmus opened a revelatory window on a parallel universe – a past that hasn’t passed, an obscured but not suspended surfing reality involving core aesthetics conceived in the 60s, fused in the 70s, and still finding expression in the soul surfing of artistic surfers everywhere. Now Litmus has been re-released with a magic spellbinder, The Ghosts are Calling, a film that co-creators Eduardo Madera and Kidman call a “Collage”. The beautiful cinematic creation blends the classic retro vibe of Litmus with working and insightful interviews with Wayne Lynch, Dave Parmenter, Derek Hynd, Neal Purchase Jr, and Mark Sutherland. I say working because of the uncompromising lifestyle realities of each of these blokes.
The ghosts that are calling in this film seem to be the spirits of that first Australian renaissance of the mid 60s that ultimately yielded the shortboard and an alternative philosophy of sustainable surf culture which is still, apparently, alive and well on Australia’s central coast. Ghosts features another classic animation by Sutherland, and a splendid soundtrack by the Brown Birds From Windy Hill (Kidman, Purchase, Sutherland, Paul Brewer, Jay Kruegner and Mick Wordley). It is so eminently listenable, you’ll want to make this puppy a travelling companion on your next 101 surf trips.

Qui ne connaît pas Candide Thovex à la Clusaz ? C’est l’enfant du pays, celui qui a su montrer que le sport est une passion à voir sur les écrans. Originaire d’Annecy et âgé de 26 ans, c’est le spécialiste mondial du freestyle. Excellent skieur, il s’affirme d’abord sur les bosses pour assez rapidement devenir champion de France de la discipline. En 1997, c’est l’année du virage où il profite de l’engouement pour le freestyle, lequel devient pour lui une nouvelle expérience ludique. Tous les terrains de glisse n’ont maintenant plus aucun secret. Les reliefs et les arbres sont tout autant de défis à surmonter. Autant dire: la joie du ski en pleine liberté. Au point qu’il devient un véritable phénomène, vite remarqué, qui va se frotter aux Américains, pourtant pratiquants aguerris de la nouvelle glisse.
Le succès aidant, il se lance dans le tournage de documentaires sur les pentes enneigées. Vainqueur aux Etats-Unis des X-Games à trois reprises, le jeune Haut-Savoyard gravit les marches de la renommée internationale. Depuis le début des années 2000, le cinéma est devenu un bel outil de promotion sportive : il glisse au rythme des bobines de pellicules.
